Sugar Free July

I have decided to give up sugar for the month of July. For anyone who knows me, this is a huge deal: I live in the land of custard cooling you off on a hot summer day, I have a freezer full of chocolate (both at home and work), and I love lemonade. But what is done is done.

The first few days were so gruesome and the head aches so horrible, I contemplated drinking coffee to get my caffeine fix. But I have weathered the storm of the first few days and find myself enduring (I only have had two slip-ups, both restaurant related) and looking for creative alternatives.

I will be honest – I am totally looking forward to my birthday cake in August, but surprisingly enough, I am even contemplating tweaking the recipe so that is has less sugar!

If you need any encouragement or ideas, let me know.

Agave Nectar is a great substitute. Also, my sister-in-law and I made some great lemonade last week using lemons, water, and maple syrup.

And, I admit, its a lot easier for me where frozen custard isn't available.

Ooh. And I cheat on chocolate. After the month is over you should reintroduce chocolate, but only dark chocolate, nothing less than 65 or 70% to start with.

I have introduced unsweetened carob to my lifestyle. Oh, and I really dislike dark chocolate. My downfall at the restaurants was 1) ordering horchata and 2) assuming when I ordered fruit, it would be real instead of pie filling type - but I only ate a few bites, I was really proud of myself. I tried to counter the horchata with lots of chips, salsa and water

you actually may acquire a taste for darker chocolates by the end of the month. that, and red wine.

the cherries were not your fault. You are doing a great job. Go Al! What are you missing the most?

I am actually doing kind of decent and don't seem to missing much at all. Last night, I was cleaning a purse out because a piece of chocolate melted in there, and instead of eating the melted chocolate or the bits on my hand, I threw the chocolate away and washed my hands! Who am I?
